The Reverend Hannah E. Atkins Romero, She/Her
Rector
The Rev. Hannah E. Atkins Romero serves as the fifteenth Rector in Trinity’s 130-year history. A third-generation Episcopal priest, she is known for her preaching, leadership in theological education, commitment to justice, and ministry across cultures. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Douglass College at Rutgers University, a Master of Divinity from The General Theological Seminary in New York, completed additional master’s-level studies in theology at the Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas (UCA) in El Salvador, and is earning a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching from the School of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee).
Before coming to Trinity, Houston, the Rev. Atkins Romero served as Senior Assistant at St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square, Washington, D.C.; Director of Theological and Christian Education for the Episcopal/Anglican Church of El Salvador; Associate Priest at St. John the Evangelist in San Salvador; Priest-in-Charge of Holy Trinity Church in Santa Teresa, San Martín; Interim Priest-in-Charge of St. Andrew’s Church in Amatepec, Soyapango; church planter in Chalatenango; and as an Appointed Missionary of The Episcopal Church. Her ministry has consistently focused on forming Christian leaders, strengthening congregations, and building bridges across cultures and communities.
A leader in the wider Church, the Rev. Atkins Romero previously served as President of the Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas and as Co-Chair of the Interfaith Advisory Council for Everytown for Gun Safety. She currently serves on the Boards of Trustees of both Virginia Theological Seminary and The General Theological Seminary and is a member of the search committees for the next Dean and President of both seminaries. She has served as a Deputy to General Convention and is an Alternate Deputy to the upcoming General Convention. Together with her husband, Elmer Romero, she co-founded the Migration with Dignity Coalition, an ecumenical movement advocating for the dignity, safety, and flourishing of migrants and refugees. Her ministry reflects a lifelong commitment to faithful preaching, theological education, reconciliation, and the Church’s public witness in the world.
The Rev. Atkins Romero and her husband, Elmer, are the parents of two sons and two daughters. Outside the church, she enjoys baseball and soccer, all genres of music, Latin American literature, writing poetry, swimming, and hiking.
She believes the Church is at its best when it proclaims the Gospel with courage, forms disciples with depth, and stands in solidarity with those on the margins.
