About Paul
Paul is a composer and performer currently finishing his doctorate at Rice University in Music Composition. He received a Master’s of Music in Music Composition from the Yale School of Music (2020) and a Bachelor’s of Music in Music Composition from Indiana University (2017). He has studied music composition with Karim Al-Zand, Art Gottschalk, Anthony Brandt, David Lang, Christopher Theofinidis, Martin Bresnick, Aaron J. Kernis, Don Freund, David Dzubay, Aaron Travers, Claude Baker, and Scott Stinson. His music has been played around the globe by performers like Liam Mansfield, Ensemble NEWSRQ, Pathos Trio, Alarm Will Sound, Callithumpian Consort, and Albany Symphony’s Dogs of Desire. In 2017, Paul was a composition fellow at Tanglewood Music Festival, and in 2022, a composition fellow at Aspen Music Festival. In 2019, he received a Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for his work Stupor and his Piano Concerto. In 2020, he received a Yale School of Music Charles Wood Award for his work Aporia, which was premiered by the Yale Philharmonic, and a Yale School of Music Teaching Fellowship, focusing on teaching electronic music. During his time at Indiana University, he sang with NOTUS contemporary vocal ensemble, IU’s Oratorio Chorus, Conductor’s Chorus, and was a section leader at the First Presbyterian Church in Franklin, Indiana. While at Yale, he was a section leader at Battell Chapel, Trinity Episcopal Church on the Green’s, and the Episcopal Church at Yale, occasionally serving at the Basilica of St. John the Evangelist in Stamford, CT. Paul is also engaged in historical performance, focusing on voice and viola da gamba, having played with both Yale and Rice Collegium Musicums. Currently, Paul, alongside his wife, Tian Qin, teaches music theory at Opus 1 Music School and works for MusiqaLab, an outreach program focused on teaching composition classes in underprivileged highschools in the greater Houston area. Beyond music, Paul is vegan and has two cats.
