THIS WEEK: Garage sales, Pentecost, Holy Spirit and Israel/Palestine

  1. Would you rather hold a garage sale, sell items online, or just donate extra stuff to Goodwill?
  2. If something at a yard sale is far more valuable than the posted price, do you have to let the seller know? What was one of your best yard sale finds?
  3. Phyllis Tickle stated some years ago: “About every five hundred years the Church feels compelled to hold a giant rummage sale. We are living in and through one of those five-hundred-year sales.” Where do you see this happening? What items from the church or theology would you want to put on sale, i.e., get rid of?
  4. The Christian holiday of Pentecost is celebrated on the 50th day from Easter Sunday. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks, as described in the Acts of the Apostles. If you’re a Christian, how important is this holiday to you?
  5. What is the Holy Spirit? What is the significance of the ‘descent of the Holy Spirit’? How did Pentecost present a shift from access to the Spirit before?
  6. What hope do you hold that there could be a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? What needs to happen for peace to occur?
