THIS WEEK: Reformation, technology, 95 theses

  1. If you had a magic box that could bring back any inanimate object that you’ve lost in your life what would you bring back?
  2. John T McQuillen, assistant curator of printed books and bindings at New York’s Morgan Library & Museum explained that “Luther wrote his ideas in short, concise texts – pamphlets of eight or 16 pages – that could be quickly printed and easily distributed. Without the printing press, the Reformation would never have been the historical event that it was.” Discuss the role of technology in such a pivotal theological and historical event. Could such the Reformation have happened 500 years earlier if the technology had been present?
  3. If you posted 95 theses to a church door today, name two things that would be included.
  4. Discuss these two theses of Luther’s 95 theses:
#26. The pope does very well when he grants remission to souls in purgatory, not by the power of the keys, which he does not have, but by way of intercession for them.
#27. They preach only human doctrines who say that as soon as the money clinks into the money chest, the soul flies out of purgatory.
  5. Discuss Thesis 29: “Who knows whether all souls in purgatory wish to be redeemed, since we have exceptions in St. Severinus and St. Paschal, as related in a legend.” Do you believe purgatory exists? If it does, what would be the motivation to stay there?
