Laudato Si Lectures with Theologian In Residence Canon Atkins begins February 20th, 2022
On Sunday Feb 20, 2022 and on Sunday March 6, 2022 at 9:30a.m. our Theologian In Residence Canon Atkins will give two lectures on what he considers to be one of the most important religious documents of our time, the document is the Papal Encyclical issued by Pope Francis entitled Laudato Si.
The ever-worsening cries of the earth and the poor, truly desperate cries, have called us to renew our vocation to care for our created order as God cares. Pope Francis calls the document more than an encyclical; it represents the Franciscan worldview of praise to the Creator. The document is an ecumenical document which is addressed to all people of good will.
In the first lecture Canon Atkins will address the document itself, which includes examining what is happening to our common home, the Gospel of Creation, the human role in the ecological crisis, lines of action and ecological education and spirituality.
Pope Francis has called for a seven year plan of action. The second lecture will focus on the seven action steps or goals of Laudato Si, called Laudato Si Action Platform. The goals are: respond to the cry of the earth, respond to the cry of the poor, ecological economics, adoption of simple lifestyles, ecological education, ecological spirituality, and emphasis on community involvement and participatory action. We will also take a brief look at the joint statement issued in support of this encyclical by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Pope Francis and the Archbishop of Canterbury.
We will be offering this lecture via Zoom as well as in person, please email the [email protected] by Noon on Friday 2/18 to get the Zoom link!
